WHAT IS THE PARTNERSHIP ?

The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing is creating partnerships with staff development educators at health care facilities to infuse best nursing practices in care of older adults into nursing work settings and ensure that elders across the country age with optimal function, comfort, and dignity.

WHAT IS THE HARTFORD INSTITUTE FOR GERIATRIC NURSING?

The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing (Institute) is the only nursing- focused institute in the country setting a national agenda and shaping the care for elderly Americans by promoting the highest level of competency in the nurses who deliver that care. It is located at the Division of Nursing of New York University and is funded by The John A. Hartford Foundation, Inc. of New York.

WHO SHOULD BE A PARTNER?

Any staff development educator from a health care facility and is looking for a leadership role to:

  • Meet age-specific JCAHO competency requirements
  • Enhance staff skills in caring for older adults
  • Develop clinical leadership expertise in geriatric nursing

HOW DOES THE PROGRAM WORK?

The Hartford Institute for Geriatric Nursing is partnering with staff development educators at health care facilities to improve geriatric nursing expertise by providing a two-part program that is adaptable to your specific facility's needs.

Part I.        Clinical Leadership Development Workshop                            Designs in geriatric nursing best practices

Part II.        Staff In-Service Lesson Plans for teaching                             geriatric nursing best practices

1.     Receive Ready-Made Materials:

The Hartford Institute provides fully organized clinical leadership workshop designs and staff in-service lesson plans that range from 20 minutes to two-day formats AND ready-made materials such as curriculum guides, teaching slides, and videos, to promote easy and effective dissemination of knowledge and skill development in best nursing practices in care for older adults.

2.     Adapt the Material to Your Needs:

You, as a leader, take this material and use it in ways that are most effective for your specific educational purposes.

3.     Participate in Technical Assistance Activities: 

The Institute provides phone consultation, a listserv, and an optional meeting to support communication among all the partners.

4.     Receive Recognition and Publicity:

You will receive a partnership certificate (suitable for framing) and national publicity about your partnership and leadership efforts in this initiative to improve nursing care for the older adults.

Hartford Institute Partnership Commitment:

  1. Full array of Partners for Dissemination Program materials
  2. Technical assistance by telephone to help you with implementation
  3. An email listserv to facilitate communication among the Institute and partners
  4. Optional meeting at the Institute to help with implementation
  5. Help in identifying geriatric nursing experts to participate in your activities
  6. Certificate of Partnership when your programming is completed
  7. Public Relations support to announce your commitment to the partnership and to improving nursing care to older adults
  8. Feedback on other partners' activities
  9. CEU packet provided for your use or CEUs provided by NYU
  10. Evaluation packet to determine program effectiveness

Your Partnership Commitment:

  1. Identification of a coordinator for the partnership
  2. Commitment to a time frame for partnership activities, including a first event within 6 months of receipt of material
  3. Description of the target audience (i.e., clinical leadership versus staff) and estimated number of participants as well as a marketing plan (if applicable)
  4. Use of the Hartford Institute materials and programming with appropriate citation
  5. Broad dissemination of programming encouraged in your geographic area
  6. Optional provision of CEUs
  7. Distribution and return of evaluation packet
  8. One-time payment of $300 for partnership participation (see exceptions above)

HOW TO BECOME A PARTNER:

  • Write a one-page letter to the Institute outlining interest and goals in becoming a partner and describing commitment of coordinator and facility.
